Something the internationals learned about Qatar today
During the first ever MC virtual meeting today (yay!), Riham has kindly shared with us about Life in Qatar. I enjoyed the times when Riham was trying to describe various elements of life to us and we were there actively firing questions to her to satisfy our curiosity. So these are what we've learnt:
- Qatar is a small peninsula in the persian gulf. Some actually refer to it as the bridge between the east and the west.
- There are almost 1.5 million people living in Qatar...with only 200k Qatari locals, which makes it a veeeeeeeeeeeery international country. You'll basically find people from all nationalities here.
- Qatar is ruled by the Emir hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. Al Thani is the royal family in Qatar
- Qatar is is a very conservative society
- They have a traditional dress that they still use to this day - Black Abaya for ladies; white thob for men
- The main university is Qatar University. It is a separate university where each gender has own campus. The other universities are co-education.
- For the non-Qataries, what we wear varies, as long as they are conservative. In some areas such as hotels and others, you can wear bathing suit to go swimming.
- In the Islamic calendar, people fast during the holy month of Ramadan. Non-muslims can eat but not in public.
- Since most people are expats, they will spend summer back in their home countries for 2 to 3 months. Hence the roads will be without traffic!
- About the weather: most of the time it is pretty hot and humid. But the good thing is everywhere is air-conditioned, so the heat is only felt when you are reaching wherever you want to reach.
